An artificial intelligence tool that can write news articles is being tested by Google and has already been presented to big names in the “media”, such as the “New York Times”, “Washington Post” and “News Corp”, which owns the “Wall Street Journal” and the “Times” of London.

The tool, called “Genesis”, is presented by Google as an aid for journalists, which can automate some of their tasks and help them boost their productivity. Specifically, it can take information —such as details from current events— and create content.

Media executives who saw Google’s presentation told The “New York Times” they found it troubling. Their objection was that “Genesis” does not seem to recognize the effort required to produce valid and well-written news articles.

«Quite simply, these tools are not intended to and cannot replace the essential role that journalists play in breaking the news, crafting their stories and fact-checking»,

said Jenn Crider, a Google spokeswoman.

News organizations around the world are grappling with how and if they should use artificial intelligence tools in their newsrooms.

Media outlets such as the “Times”, “NPR” and “Insider” have informed their staff that they intend to investigate possible uses of artificial intelligence.

Some news organizations, such as the “Associated Press”, have long used artificial intelligence to generate articles on topics such as corporate earnings announcements. This is, however, a small part of their articles, with the vast majority being created by journalists.

Google’s new tool is sure to cause anxiety among journalists. Last month, Germany’s “Bild” —Europe’s top-selling newspaper— laid off around 200 people and warned of future cuts due to the opportunities of artificial intelligence.
