These are the best hidden settings and most exciting tricks you can do with Windows 11.

Every new version of Windows is accompanied by a mixture of excitement for the new features that have been added and trepidation for the changes that it entails. But what all Windows users agree on is that they want the best and fastest experience possible.

So, we’ve put together the most essential tips and tricks you need to get the most out of Windows 11.

1. Move Start in Windows 11

You’ll notice that the “Start” button and the icons on the taskbar are centered. However, if you don’t prefer to see this layout when you’re on your laptop, you can change their position.

If you prefer the “Start” button to be in the left corner like it always has, right-click on an empty part of the taskbar and select Taskbar settings. Click on the Taskbar behaviors section to expand it, then select Left from the Taskbar alignment drop-down menu.

2. Enable dark mode

The option to switch to dark mode, also known as “dark mode,” is a trend that is particularly popular in many different applications and devices. After mobile, you can also enable it on the PC thanks to Windows 11.

If you prefer darker tones, right-click on an empty part of the desktop and select “Personalization,” then click on the “Color” section. From the drop-down menu labeled “Choose your mode,” select “Dark.”

3. Better organization with snap layout

If you run multiple apps at once and have multiple pages open, it can be difficult to organize your windows on the screen for easy navigation. Windows 11’s “Snap” feature could be the solution you’re looking for.

Hover your mouse pointer over the “Maximize/Resize” button and you can select a layout to quickly arrange your open windows. There are several to choose from, each suited to different tasks and screen sizes.

4. No more distractions with Focus assist

“Focus Assist” can be used to prevent notifications from appearing when you need to limit distractions and continue your work on the computer. Open “Settings” and go to the “System” section followed by “Focus assist”.

If you select “Alarms only”, notifications from your alarm clock are the only notifications that will bother you. You can use the “Priority only” option to choose other notifications that will also be allowed and choose the times when “Focus assist” can be automatically activated.

5. Choose your own widgets

“Widgets” are mini apps that appear in a small pop-up window when you click the “Widgets” button on the taskbar (the blue and white button next to the “Start” button). You can customize the “widgets” you see by clicking the button followed by your profile picture in the upper right.

Click the “+” button next to a widget preview to add it to your screen. Back in the widget panel, you can remove unwanted ones by clicking the “x” in their upper right corner.

6. Improve your sound

Whether you listen with speakers or headphones connected to your laptop, Windows 11 can make your sound better. Right-click the volume icon on the taskbar and select “Sound settings.”

Click the arrow to the right of the audio device you’re using, scroll down to the options, and move the toggle labeled “Enhance audio” to the “On” position.

7. Pin your frequently used apps

Your most frequently used apps can be pinned to the taskbar or to the top of the “Start” menu for easy access. Click the “Start” button, locate the shortcut for a frequently used app, and right-click it.

From the menu that appears, you can select “Pin to Start” or “Pin to taskbar,” whichever you prefer.

8. Type faster with Voice Typing

If you want to enter text a little faster, you can try speaking into your computer instead of using the keyboard. Press “Windows + H” to launch “Voice Typing” which you can then use to dictate text instead of typing it by hand.

9. Customize Quick Settings

Click the “Network/Volume/Power” button on the “taskbar” and you’ll see “Quick Settings” that provide easy access to key options and settings.

You can remove items you don’t need or add new ones that are missing by clicking the pencil button, then click the “Unpin” button next to an unwanted item or tap “Add” to select more.

10. The Most Useful Shortcut

There are many handy keyboard shortcuts in Windows 11, but one of the most useful for anyone who frequently changes settings is “Windows + I”. Pressing this key combination will open the “Settings” app.
