FightHoax: 20-year-old Greek student innovates in the fight against fake news!

Software for the detection of false news spread on the Web was created by a 20-year-old computer student from the University of Macedonia.

As the FightHoax master spirit, Valentino Tzekas explains, his program is a global innovation, since it allows users to control in seconds any news posted on the internet, assessing its validity.

“The bad thing is that people tend to believe everything they read on the internet. That’s why I decided to do something to block the false news”,

he said in a recent interview.

The Greek student expresses the hope that online giants such as Google and Facebook, who are investing billions of dollars to address the issue, will buy and integrate their program into their systems.

The reason for the creation of FightHoax was the US presidential election last year. Among the news that circulated about Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, there were too many mistakes.

“It was so many false news that I did not know where the truth is”,

says Mr. Tzekas in a recent interview with the AMP.

In 2016-17 we hit a crazy record of false news (…) so one day I sat down and I thought: Can I create something that will analyze news articles and warn the reader of anything suspicious, such as the use of propaganda language?” “Can I do something that in a matter of seconds will do what people do fact checkers and make a result of whether the article you are reading is true or a scam?”

The 20-year-old Valentine’s patent follows the passage of a bill of interest in Germany that recognizes online platforms the right to remove non-existent articles.

Within the next few months, the student will also go to Brussels to present his program and the solutions he offers to the problem of false news.

Asked about how easy it is to create a start-up company, the student acknowledges that most young people do not do it, as they are affected by the difficult economic situation in Greece!

As Onassis said, we must give up the hope that the weather will become better! We have to move in an unstable time (…) we must live with this logic now and leave any excuse to the end. I believe, if you have a really good idea that can survive on the market, you can run it (…) The key word is the start. It’s everything. The difficulties will always be bureaucracy and lack of … madness but they should not keep us back! “

This is not the first time that he makes the difference!

The fighthoax is not the first job of the student to attract international attention. In 2015, Mr. Tzekas created the application “Near”, which helps smartphone users control real-time, which of their contacts are within a short radius of themselves.

Then, in the first months of its official launch, the application had surpassed competition in Greece and Europe, measuring more than 30,000 users! Soon the redemption proposal from a Turkish startup came, but the coup followed, so the deal did not go ahead.

After the team’s participation in SXSW in Texas, finally “Near” was bought by Pinticks.

Six months later, Facebook “followed” the developments, filling in the gap with a similar application the “nearby people”.
