Artificial Intelligence reads the mind and makes a film of what it sees

In the future, would artificial intelligence not only read the contents of a man’s mind, but also make a video of what it sees? Surely this will not happen soon, but the first steps have just begun.

A team of researchers, who published a publication in the “Cerebral Cortex” neuroscience journal, according to Science, created a system of artificial intelligence whose algorithms can partially guess what the human mind thinks and then try to convert its thoughts in pictures.

The researchers, headed by the Chinese-based assistant professor Zongming Liu of the University of Pennsylvania’s Electrical and Computer Engineering and Biomedical Engineering School, have put three women to watch hundreds of videos and at the same time a fMRI was recording their brain activity.

At the same time, a convolutional neural network of deep learning and image processing learned to associate images with women’s brain patterns. From one point onwards, the artificial intelligence system could only predict what volunteers were seeing and, based on this assessment, the researchers were able to make a rough picture of the brain’s content.

So far, the system -by analyzing brain activity- has a success rate of about 50% (i.e. it falls within half the time) in guessing what a person is seeing and what his brain is doing, choosing between 15 categories of objects and activities (bird, airplane, physical exercise, etc.).

If the artificial intelligence system has been trained into data by one woman, but tried to guess the brain content of another woman, then its success rate drops to 25% (one in four).

The system has already begun to reproduce the image of what a person has in his brain, but for the moment the static images are like “splashes” of pixels. But researchers believe the system will progress along the path, and will once be able to “translate” thoughts or even dreams into digital computer data and eventually into video tapes.

In other words, the ultimate goal is to create science fiction machines that will read and display our minds on a screen! But this will not be easy at all, because the mind of man is an abyss
