The ability to understand when a heart attack is really serious and potentially fatal is applicable to smartphones, according to an international research team led by researchers at the “Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute” in Salt Lake City, USA, making it a precious tool, capable of saving lives.

According to the research, this application, which monitors cardiac activity and determines whether someone is suffering from a STEMI heart attack, has the same level of precision as a conventional electrocardiogram used to diagnose heart attacks.

As the researchers say, these findings are particularly important as speed plays an extremely important role in saving the patient in cases of heart attack “STEMI”.

“The sooner you open the artery, the better the patient will be. We found that this application can speed things up and save your life”,

said G. Brent Mulestain, lead researcher.

In the research, 204 chest pain patients underwent a normal cardiogram and a cardiogram through the “AliceCor” application through the smartphone and a special two-cord accessory. Scientists have found application in conjunction with the cables, effective to distinguish occurrences “STEMI” from non “STEMI” events, and with particularly high sensitivity compared to the conventional ECG.

“We found that the application helped us diagnose heart attacks very effectively and did not indicate a heart attack when one did not occur,

said Mulestain, pointing out that it could significantly speed up assistance to the patient suffering from such a heart attack.

Also, the combination price (application with cable accessories) is low, which could offer electrocardiography capabilities to anyone with “smartphone” or “smartwatch”, making this technology accessible to third world countries where normal “ECG” machines are hard to find.
