“Wi-Fi Alliance”, the organization that certifies the “Wi-Fi” products, introduces a new, simpler naming of the various models, abandoning the classic “802.11”.
With the new system, the new “Wi-Fi 5 standard” will include devices that support today’s “802.11ac” technology, while the new “Wi-Fi standard 4” will cover devices that support “802.11n” technology.
The earlier technology standards “802.11g”, “802.11a” and “802.11b” will not be renamed as no longer widely used.
The organization also launched the “Wi-Fi 6 standard”, which was announced last January as “802.11ax technology”.
“The Wi-Fi Alliance is excited about introducing “Wi-Fi 6” and introduces a new designation scheme to help industry and “Wi-Fi” users easily understand the “Wi-Fi” device-supported or connected”
Edgar Figueroa, chairman and CEO of “Wi-Fi Alliance”, said in a statement.
The new method of naming “wireless technologies” makes it easier for consumers to locate the device they are going to buy and to find out what features are supported by their devices and the networks around them.
At the same time, manufacturers of networking devices and “chipsets” such as “Netgear”, “MediaTek”, “Intel” and “Qualcomm” already stated their support for the changes.
The new “Wi-Fi 6 standard” is expected to be adopted by manufacturers soon, with the first networking devices expected to show up in 2019.
