Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the World Wide Web, the well-known “www”, which made the Internet accessible to all and essentially made the Internet the world we know today, decided to sell the program code.
The British scientist had stated at first that he did not wish to make any money from the creation of the program and that is why he had not legally guaranteed it, allowing it to be processed and improved by anyone who wished to do so, with a view to the progress of the project and the development of the Internet.
However, he decided to auction through Sotheby’s the original code of the program as “NFT”. The code has great historical significance and is expected to reach a high price, since it will be accompanied by the digital signature of its creator as proof of authenticity. Lee announced that the full amount to be given for the purchase of the code would be given to various charitable purposes.
“NFT (non-fungible token)” is a new kind of digital asset, which saw its popularity skyrocket during the pandemic, as investors and ordinary Internet users rush to spend large sums on objects that exist only in digital form.
“Blockchain” technology allows the authenticity and uniqueness of objects to be publicly confirmed, unlike “traditional” “online” objects that can be reproduced without end.
As “NFTs” sold a variety of online items, from digital artwork and sports cards to virtual environments, or the exclusive use of names in cryptocurrency wallets.
