The city of Bad Herzfeld was selected by Deutsche Post as a robot test site designed to accompany postmen on their routes, transporting package loads for delivery.

Residents of two areas of the city will soon see the self-propelled Electric PostBOT accompany the postmen. The robot will carry the packet load, relieving postmen from it and allowing them to make packet delivery faster. Deutsche Post will closely monitor the entire program to see how much the robot really helps.

“Our staff provides excellent but exhausting services every day. We are constantly working on new solutions that enable employees to do this job even as they age “

said Jürgen Gerndes, chief executive of Deutsche Post’s mail-e-commerce department.

“We already use a variety of tools in this area, including e-Bikes and e-Trikes for deliveries, and we are also looking at innovative robotic applications. This test is expected to provide meaningful insights into how we can further develop the delivery process for our employees. “

PostBOT will also be provided to a municipal employee who distributes correspondence between local government offices. For his part, Tomas Felling, mayor of the city, expressed his joy at the selection of Bad Herzfeld.

In terms of the robot itself, it was custom-made based on a robot of the French Effidence S.A.S and information and data from Deutsche Post staff to ensure that their job needs are met. It can carry loads of up to 150 kg, while its sensors follow the postman’s legs, which is followed throughout the route. The robot can overcome obstacles or stop when needed and can be used in any weather conditions.

The test will take about six weeks and will be followed by an evaluation period. Then there will be another round of tests and improvements.
