An AI system for which Microsoft researchers based in the UK have teamed with oncologists to help make cancer therapy more effective. “InnerEye” uses artificial intelligence to analyze CT and / or MRI scanning, allowing oncologists to look into the patient’s body in three dimensions and study abnormalities such as tumors . In particular for radiologically exposed cancer patients, the aforementioned examinations help radiologists isolate the infected cell from healthy tissues, avoiding contact with the pure cell and organ environment as much as possible.
Nowadays, this process is done manually and continues to be prone to errors, and requires the radiologist to draw hundreds of strokes by hand – a process that can take hours. “InnerEye” was designed to perform the same work in a fraction of that time, providing physicians with complete and accurate control of the final cell separation.
To create the “InnerEye” system, researchers used hundreds of primary CT and MRI. The tests were fed into an artificial intelligence system that learned to recognize tumors and healthy cells with unprecedented precision. The oncologist then fine-tunes the contour design, while always maintaining control. In the future, “InnerEye” can serve both in measuring and monitoring changes in tumor over time, and in assessing the extent of a treatment that works.
