Intel has announced its new 5G modem, “Intel XMM 8160” ,which will support future networks 5G and older 2G, 3G and 4G.

The new “Intel XMM 8160” will support frequencies from 600MHz up to 6GHz, ie up to three times faster than the current LTE” modem.

According to the manufacturer, the modem is designed to work with any type of device, from “smartphones” to “laptops”“desktops” and “hotspots”.

Intel has made it known that the deliveries of the “XMM 8160” will begin to manufacturers from the second half of 2019, while the first commercially available devices embedded with the new modem will make an appearance in the first half of 2020.

It is worth mentioning that Intel with this announcement closed the cycle that had been opened by other manufacturers in the past.

Samsung did present the “Exynos Modem 5100 5G” last August, while Qualcomm announced already by February that collaborates with 19 other manufacturers to integrate devices into the new “Snapdragon X50”.

Particularly worth mentioning is that Apple has ceased to use Qualcomm’s modem rotation this year for Intel to supply the relevant hardware. It remains unknown whether Apple will prefer Intel in 2019, but plans have been leaked out of Intel in 2020.
