In the text below you can see useful tips on how you can clear your mobile phone’s cookies or cache.

What are cookies?

Cookies, like the temporary cache, are small data files that store information about your habits and preferences. They store data. For example, they can “remember” where you live and thus show you weather forecasts or even remind you of what you have left in your shopping cart on a commercial website.

They keep you logged in to websites and customize advertisements according to your preferences. There are essential cookies, which are useful for the operation of websites, and third-party cookies, which are mainly used for advertising.

Why clear them?

To protect your personal data and privacy. In this way, you reduce the exposure of your preferences to third parties. How much do you want these tech companies to know about you and your preferences? And what happens if a website that keeps your sensitive information automatically loaded suffers a data breach?

To fix “bugs” on websites, such as slow loading, connection issues, screen glitches, such as freezing or crashing. Clearing your cookies can free up storage space and improve the overall performance of your device.

How to delete cookies?

iPhone

Go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data.

Tap Clear History and Data to confirm.

To block cookies:

Go to Settings > Safari > Advanced.

Turn on Block All Cookies, which is generally not recommended, as it can cause problems with websites. A better option when a website asks for your permission to allow cookies is to select “essential cookies only”.

Android

Open Chrome and tap the three dots in the top right corner.

Select History > Clear Browsing Data.

Check Cookies and Website Data and tap Clear Data.

To block third-party cookies:

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Third-Party Cookies and enable blocking.

As mentioned earlier, blocking all cookies is not a very good solution, as you will experience problems when visiting some websites. But the Chrome browser option mentioned above only blocks third-party cookies (non-essential), which is recommended.

How are cookies different from cache

Cookies and cache are often lumped together, as they are both small pieces of information stored on your devices, but they are not the same thing. Cache temporarily stores data for faster loading. The first time you visit a website, your browser downloads a copy of the website to your device and stores it in the cache so that when you visit it again, your phone doesn’t have to download the entire website from scratch. Cookies store preferences and login information.

How to Clear Cache

iPhone

Follow the same steps as clearing cookies. As with clearing cookies, this will close all open Safari tabs, but will preserve your AutoFill information, including passwords. Just in case, have a backup copy of them (e.g. stored in a trusted password manager app). Also, be aware that there’s no way to clear the cache for all apps on your iPhone at once.

Android

In Chrome, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Clear Browsing Data.

Select Cached Images & Files

Like on iPhones, there’s no way to clear an Android’s cache from all third-party apps at once.

To clear the cache of individual apps on an Android phone:

Go to Settings > Apps > Select the app you want to clear > Storage > Clear Data & Cache.

If you don’t see it, the app in question doesn’t let you clear its cache.

All of this information takes up a lot of space, limiting the storage available for your photos, files, and other apps. They can also slow down your phone’s response time, reduce its overall performance, and cause it to freeze or crash more often.

Clearing the cache can fix these problems and reduce the number of websites that track you. It often removes the user’s website preferences, websites visited, video titles watched and audio titles listened to, login information, shopping cart contents, and identifiers.
