Utilizing the capabilities of artificial intelligence, Google Maps becomes every driver’s best friend.
The popularity of Google Maps is enormous, given the convenience it offers to drivers, informing them –among other things– of traffic on the roads, but also of how to get to an unknown destination.
Day by day, however, leveraging the capabilities of artificial intelligence, Google Maps is becoming more and more capable, being enriched with new functions that make the life of drivers easier. Let’s look at the most important of them.
A helping hand is offered by the upgrade of the function related to the 3D visualization of buildings. Until now, 3D visualization was found on maps, but not during the navigation phase, which is changing to further facilitate users as they receive directions on how to get to a destination.
By upgrading this feature, the user will be able to get a taste of a building’s surroundings, see traffic conditions, check if there is a parking space, and so on.
At the same time, the “Lens in Maps” function offers convenience. With the help of artificial intelligence, the Maps can recognize through the user’s camera the buildings he is looking at and then offer him useful information.
For example, if he has just exited a Metro station and wants to get to know the surroundings, he can simply press the “Lens” icon and then raise his mobile phone, scanning the buildings with it to find out about coffee shops, ATMs, etc.
In addition, the ever-increasing demand for electric cars led Google to the decision to start including summaries in its Maps, where the exact location of charging points will be described, based on useful information from user reviews.
For example, when an electric vehicle driver is headed to a charging station, they will be able to see detailed descriptions such as:
“Enter the underground car park and follow the signs to the exit. Just before the exit, turn right.”
Summaries will be based on user reviews but will be generated with the help of artificial intelligence.
Finally, Google, utilizing the capabilities of “AI”, is working on the “Green Light project”, which aims to create the most efficient traffic light operating patterns; on the one hand, to improve traffic flow and on the other hand, to reduce emissions pollutants.
With the help of artificial intelligence, Google can analyze, in a reasonable period of time, the huge amount of data it collects from its Maps (Google Maps) regarding the movement and the pace of traffic on the given road.
After analyzing the collected data, the technological giant can propose to the respective competent authority the adjustments that should be made to the existing traffic light pattern of an intersection, in order to reduce the frequency of “stop-start” vehicles.
By optimizing, in fact, the operation patterns of the traffic lights, not only of one intersection, but of several adjacent ones, it is possible to create “green waves” and therefore to dramatically improve traffic flow and further reduce emissions.
