At least 100 robotics experts urge, in a letter recently sent to the United Nations, immediate action to prevent the development of a “killer robot”.
The British BBC News Network reported in the letter that Artificial Intelligence experts, including billionaire Elon Mask, are warning of a “Third War Revolution”. It also states that “autonomous lethal” technology could be the Pandora’s box.
The 116 experts are calling on the UN to ban the use of Artificial Intelligence for Arms Management.
“If they develop, they will allow armed conflicts to take place on a larger scale than the world has seen so far and in a timeframe faster than people can understand”,
the letter said, adding:
“These could be also weapons to strengthen terrorism, weapons that terrorists could use against innocent populations, and weapons that could hijack hackers so as to “behave” in undesirable ways”.
As the BBC says, the letter’s tone is imperative, as experts warn that
“there is not much time left for action”.
“Once Pandora’s box is opened, it will be hard to close”,
they warn.
Experts are calling for them to be included in the arms embargo list under the United Nations Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW), which they describe as “unethical technology”. A possible ban on the development of “killer robots” technology has been previously discussed by UN committees.
It is also worth noting that in 2015, at least 1,000 specialists in Artificial Intelligence, scientists and researchers had sent a letter highlighting the dangers of developing autonomous weapons. Among those who had signed this letter were distinguished scientist Steven Hawking, Apple co-founder Stephen Bosnian and Elon Mask.
