One of the most historic names in video games is Atari, but its glow has declined for decades, as it is a company that is best known for its achievements in the “sunrise” of the field, rather than the way it kept pace with the advancement of technology.
So the news that the company is preparing to launch a new gaming machine has caused an “earthquake” in the field of computer games.
A few days ago, Atari had released a teaser for her new product, called “Ataribox”. In a video uploaded to a website that did not belong to the company, the image of a device appeared; but many wondered whether it was authentic or some kind of prank, since the name “Atari” refers more to the 1970s and 1980s than 2017.
However, in an interview to the “GamesBeat” last week, Atari CEO Fred Chenne just confirmed this: The legendary company is working on a new console.
“We are returning to hardware!”,
he noted, but he did not reveal a lot of details; although he said it was a PC-based console, and the company is working on the design and will reveal more later.
The company had filed for bankruptcy in 2013, but it was saved at the last minute when Chenne bought it, promising to give back her old glory. Now it is profitable, operating in the mobile game marketplace, and is licensing its brands broadly; such as licensing its name in the forthcoming “Blade Runner 2049” science fiction film.
It is also active in the field of “Internet of Things”; the “smart” home appliances for modern, interconnected homes: In 2016 it announced cooperation with “SIGFOX” to develop a series of new, interconnected “smart” devices based on its historical brand Atari.
Regarding the strategy behind the new console, the company might “bet” on the appeal of retro games to a large portion of the audience of our time, as well as the success of the “NES Classic Edition”; a new, updated version of Nintendo’s legendary “NES” console, allowing its owners to play old games on HD TVs.
