Apple is reported to be among the companies experimenting with the use of fingerprint scanners placed on the smartphone screen.
According to a report by the Korean newspaper Chosun, Apple is among the companies that will attempt to take such a step. At this stage, the US company is reportedly evaluating the available technologies.
There are three essential technologies that are used by in-display scanners: optical, capacitive and ultrasound. Synaptics and Gudix are the companies that have developed the first-type sensors and so far there have been limited-scale implementations on Vivo, Huawei and Xiaomi devices. These optical sensors are inexpensive but not so accurate.
Chosun argues that Apple, along with Samsung Electronics and Qualcomm, is advancing the development of sensors based on ultrasound technology. This technology uses components much more expensive but is much more accurate to offer an upgraded user experience.
The report considers that Samsung will be able to use this technology in the upcoming Galaxy S10, which will reasonably be launched by March 2019. It remains unclear whether and when Apple will attempt to bring this technology to its devices, however Chosun speculates that if the in-display scanners are adopted by the competition, inevitably Apple will follow.
