Research links Facebook’s extended use with … misery

American scientific research has managed to link Facebook’s extensive use with … misery.

In particular, Holly B. Shakya of the University of California, and Nicholas A. Christakis of Yale, have been able to prove what previous investigations have failed to do.

The studies so far have managed to partially link the use of social media to the personal misery of the users, but they did not have any specific information about Facebook alone.

As Independent says, the researchers managed to detect the negative impact of using the American colossus platform on its users’ psychology in a period of three years and a sample of 5,208 people.

Researchers have discovered that daily habits of facebook users, such as change status or the opening of a link, have made their mental health worse by 5-8%.

In an article in a scientific journal, the researchers explained how they analyzed both the mental and physical health of their samples while analyzing their behavior on Facebook, i.e. how much time they spend using the app, how many friends they have, how many likes they do

Shakya and Christakis also discovered what activity was causing the biggest dissatisfaction among users.

Like on third party posts and the opening of suggested topics on websites had a direct impact on the users’ psychosis and the image they had for themselves.

The survey concluded that the real risk of widespread use of the social media network arises when users think they are actually building social interactions through facebook while they do not receive any of the benefits of their own contact.
