The size of nearly three football fields has the “New Journey”; a tanker that was delivered to its new owners in northeastern China: It is said to be the world’s first “smart” ship and capable of carrying 308,000 tons of cargo.
According to RT, which relies on Chinese media, a key feature of the boat -that falls within the category of VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier)– is the ”smart” system that has been installed: The 300-meter tanker has, among others, assisted navigation of automatic pilot, “smart” liquid cargo management, integrated energy management systems, etc.
The tanker joined the China Merchants Energy Shipping Company fleet and its delivery was made in Dalian City on Saturday.
It was built by the Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (DSIC), subsidiary of the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC).
The vessel has already successfully completed its marine testing, as well as other tests, including testing of its “smart” equipment / systems.
“At the moment, countries around the world are actively promoting smart navigation and developing smart ship technologies; which plays an important role in improving maritime safety, saving energy, reducing pollutants and cost-effectiveness“
said Guan Ginghua, deputy chief engineer of DSIC, according to China News Service.
