Facebook is preparing a new digital platform called “metaverse”.
The new platform will allow users to meet each other in a virtual digital environment, using “augmented reality technology”.
As it explains in the relevant announcement, the name “metaverse” comes from a combination of the words “meta” and “universe”.
It will allow users to move between devices and communicate in a virtual environment.
“Europeans will be the first to shape this new environment.”
the announcement concludes.
To carry out the plan, Facebook announced that it will hire 10,000 new employees in the European Union over the next five years.
Some argue that Facebook is trying to change the agenda.
“Facebook has suffered a major blow to its reputation”
notes the Financial Times correspondent in Europe, Javier Espinoza.
“In Brussels, an unfair competition investigation is being conducted into whether the company uses the data it collects from users to strengthen itself against competitors.”
In addition to unfair competition practices, Facebook is accused of prioritizing profits over safety and well-being of users, with victims mainly children and teenagers.
