A new American supercomputer named “Summit” literally won the top of supercomputers, being the most powerful and “smart” in the world.
“Summit” is based at the US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee and reaches 200,000 trillion petaflops.
The title of the No. 1 supercomputer so far housed Chinese “Sunway TaihuLight” of China’s National Computer Center in Wuyi, with a maximum performance of 93 petaflops.
The “Summit” is an IBM AC922 system consisting of 4,608 servers with a total memory of more than 10 petabytes. He is about eight times stronger than the now-best American supercomputer, “Titan”, also by the Oak Ridge Laboratory, who was fifth in the world rankings.
If the Chinese do not have a hidden “ace”, the next official Top 500 ranking of supercomputers will confirm the overthrow of the hierarchy. Up to now, in the top five are an American supercomputer, two Chinese, one Swiss and one Japanese.
The “Summit” is a scientific supercomputer to be used in researches in the field of energy, new materials, artificial intelligence, astrophysics, biomedicine, etc., paving the way for new discoveries that until now were impossible.
“The creation of the “Summit” supercomputer shows the strength of American leadership in scientific innovation and technology development. It brings our country a step closer to the goal of creating a supercomputer system in the hexagram (at least 1 exaflops) by 2021“,
US Secretary of Energy Rick Perry proudly said, according to an ORNL statement.
