Xiaomi: Wireless mobile charging from the other end of the room

A new wireless device charging technology introduced by Xiaomi: According to the company, “Mi Air Charge Technology” revolutionizes wireless charging methods, allowing wireless charging remotely, without cables or wireless charging “stands”.

“Today we are entering a true era of wireless charging”,

the company underlines in a statement. 

At the “heart” of the Chinese company’s technology are the position in space and the transmission of energy. The company’s “isolated charging pile” has five built-in phase interference antennas that can accurately detect the location of the “smartphone”. A phase control array consisting of 144 antennas transmits millimeter-wide waves directly to the telephone via “beamforming”.

On the “smartphone” side, the company has also developed a tiny array of antennas with built-in “beacon antenna” and “antenna-receiver array”. The “beacon antenna” transmits information about the location with low power consumption. The “receiver array”, which consists of 14 antennas, converts the signal transmitted by the charging column into electricity through a special circuit.

This wireless charging technology is currently capable of 5watt wireless charging for a device within a radius of several meters. Apart from that, it is possible to charge multiple devices at the same time (each device supports 5watt), while physical obstacles do not reduce the charging efficiency.

As Xiaomi argues, this technology in the near future will be able to work with “smart” watches, bracelets and other “wearable” devices.

“Soon our living room appliances, including speakers, office lamps and other “smart” household products will be based on a wireless power plan, completely cordless, making our living rooms completely wireless,”

the company emphasizes in its announcement.
