Google has introduced a new Artificial Intelligence software that makes an appointment or phone bookings on behalf of users, making voice conversations on their behalf e.g. with a doctor, a hairdresser or a restaurant.
As CEO Sunart Pinchai announced at the US-based annual software developer conference in California, the new “smart” Google Duplex tool will begin experimenting in the next few weeks.
If it does work, then, analysts estimate, according to the BBC, that it will provide a significant competitive advantage to Google Assistant in relation to personal digital assistants of other companies. Google Assistant will also be enriched with six new voices.
The demonstration made by Google shows that the computer-generated voice is more natural than any other yet, and it does not seem to be a machine, as it does even the characteristic “yea …” features. However, according to analysts, it remains to be seen in practice whether users will trust software to call and converse on their behalf.
At the same event, Google also introduced other innovations, such as an improved version of the Google News tool, which – thanks to the new feature “Full Coverage” – allows users to learn more about the news they are interested in by providing a greater variety of titles from various trusted sources, combined with questionnaires, social media posts, etc.
In addition, new features have been added to Google Maps, including augmented reality graphics and cartoon characters, which make it easy for the user to understand the destination directions. Google’s ability to understand exactly where the user is, thanks to the new VPS (Visual Positioning System), which uses the camera’s mobile device to complement GPS data, has also been improved. The changes will be implemented from this summer.
Also, the “smarter” Gmail will now automatically populate suggestions based on the information gathered for the user. While the even more “smart” Google Photos will suggest that the user send copies of the photo to the faces of the user’s contacts, which the software will recognize in the photo. It can also automatically convert black and white photos to color and convert document photos to pdf files. These changes will come into force within the next two months.
The company also launched “digital prosperity” initiatives to encourage users, especially young people, to “peel off” their screens. Among other things, a new Android tool will let users know how much time they have spent using various apps and will allow them to set themselves a maximum time they want to dedicate to their phone.
In addition, as the AMNA transmits, the new -ninth in the row- improved version of the operating system, called Android P, was introduced. Among other things, the device’s battery can use artificial intelligence to customize application usage to saves energy. Also, Android P devices will learn to adjust the brightness of the screen themselves, by studying the user’s manual preferences.
According to research firm “Gartner”, Android -Google’s operating system- is “running” on 86% of the smartphones sold worldwide in 2017 (1.1% more than in 2016). Also, according to analysis firm “App Annie”, four out of five mobile applications are Android.
