What research reveals about male fertility and laptop use.
Men who use a laptop may experience fertility problems.
This is supported by research from Stony Brook University in New York, focusing on the way men use the laptop, who rest it on their thighs.
Laptops and infertility
The scientists studied two possible ways in which laptops can affect male fertility. When the man places the laptop on his lap or thighs, the heat generated and the electromagnetic field surrounding him can affect the ability of the testicles to produce sperm as well as the quality of the sperm itself.
Heat emitted from a laptop could raise the temperature of the scrotum, the sac of skin that protects the testicles.
This is important because a key role of the scrotum is to keep the temperature of the testicles lower than the body temperature. The testicles are the organs that produce sperm. When the testicles are too hot, they cannot produce as much sperm and the quality is lower.
Effects of heat on fertility
However, the finding that laptops may play a role in male infertility is controversial. Despite findings on how heat and electromagnetic fields affect testicular temperature and sperm quality and quantity, more research is needed to prove a direct link between laptop use and male fertility.
That said, studies show that the more testicles are exposed to laptop heat and the closer the device is to the genitals, the greater the risk of sperm and fertility damage.
For these reasons, men who are accustomed to using a laptop should remember the following:
- Avoid crossing their legs if sitting and keep them slightly open.
- Limit the frequency of placing the laptop on their lap each time they use it.
- Rest the laptop on a table.
