The European Space Agency (ESA) and Rolls-Royce have signed a co-operation agreement to examine ways in which space and satellite technology can be exploited to help develop autonomous and remotely controlled ships.
Self-directed or remote-controlled ships will have less room for human error and smaller crews will be able to concentrate on other tasks.

The aim of the agreement is mainly to make use of European satellites to interconnect ‘smart’ ships and navigate them from their computers on their deck or at a remote offshore control center.
The new land-based and satellite services (ship-to-shore) will take advantage of ESA’s “Satellite for 5G” (S45G) initiative to develop integrated satellite and land-based telecommunication and fifth generation networks for shipping, and other sectors.
