The Web browser “Internet Explorer” will “expire”, after almost 27 years of life, and it will not reappear in versions of “Windows 10” after June 15, 2022, according to Microsoft. Discontinuing support also means that the company will not release periodic security updates for “Explorer”.
The once hugely popular browser appeared in 1995 with “Windows 95” and between 2000-2005 had a market share of 90% to 95% worldwide. The “Internet Explorer” —which has now reached its 11th version— had been losing ground in late 2000, after the appearance of “Google Chrome”, which overcame “Internet Explorer” for the first time in 2012. According to the “Statcounter” company, in April 2021 “Chrome” had a global market share of approximately 67% compared to 11% of “Mozilla Firefox”, 7% of “Internet Explorer”, 5% of “Safari” of Apple and 4% of “Edge”.
Microsoft stated that the replacement of the “Explorer”, the “Microsoft Edge” program —which first appeared in 2015 with the “Windows 10”— has a compatibility feature with “Internet Explorer”, which will continue to work, allowing users to “load” old web pages.
The American company also recently announced that it will change, and in fact with “democratic” procedures, another of its historical features, the default font, which is “Calibri” in all its products from 2007. In this context, invited users around the world to vote for the new preferred font and the proven most popular will replace “Calibri”.
