Never before have there been so many “social media” platforms where people connect and share their thoughts. Whether it’s classic options like “Facebook” and Twitter”, image-based apps like “Snapchat” or “Instagram”, or video sharing platforms like “TikTok”; it matters that there’s something for every taste.
A new app comes to focus on a different medium: sound; the “Clubhouse” app, which requires inviting new users, uses voice chatrooms rather than image to connect users.
What is “Clubhouse”?
“Clubhouse” is a social networking app where users share audio clips instead of text posts.
The company is described as:
“a new type of voice-based social media”,
where:
“people from every place can talk, tell stories, develop ideas, deepen friendships and meet interesting new people.”
It was developed by Paul Davison and Rohan Seth, while “CNBC“ reported that the company was worth about $100 million by May 2020.
When users enter the app, they can choose between different virtual “rooms” to which they can “log in”. When a user enters a room, the sound turns on automatically. The creator of a room decides who can speak and interested users can raise their hands to join the discussion.
According to “CNBC”, the experience is:
“like walking into a conference room where a panel or Q&A takes place.”
Users can join different rooms at any time, or create their own. On its website, “Clubhouse” says users have used the app to communicate on issues such as politics, everyday life and entertainment.
“It’s a place to meet friends, make new acquaintances with people from all over the world, tell stories, ask questions, discuss, learn and have impressive conversations about thousands of different topics.”
How to join the “Clubhouse”:
Currently, “Clubhouse” prides itself on the “exclusivity” it provides to its users, as you must be invited to join the platform by an existing user.
According to the “New York Times”, the app had 600,000 users in December 2020. (By comparison, “Facebook” has 2.7 billion users and “Twitter” has 330 million.)
The company’s website offers hope to those interested in participating, since it states — according to “Today”— that:
“they are building the “Clubhouse” for everyone and are working to make it available to the world as soon as possible.”
It is not clear, however, when people will be able to participate without an invitation.
“iPhone” users can download the app and get a user name without an invitation; however, they still don’t have access to the app or chat rooms.
